INEC Warns as 9 Parties Access Candidate Nomination Codes

INEC candidate nomination access codes issued to 9 parties as commission warns against delays in uploading 2027 election candidate details

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, 1 July 2026, issued a fresh warning to political parties over delays in the submission of candidate particulars for the 2027 general elections, even as it confirmed that nine registered parties have already received access codes to upload their nominees on the commission’s portal.

The commission’s National Commissioner in charge of Voter Education and Publicity, Malam Mohammed Haruna, disclosed the development in Abuja, stressing that political parties must comply strictly with nomination timelines or risk avoidable setbacks in the electoral process.

According to Haruna, INEC candidate nomination access codes have been collected by nine political parties to enable them upload particulars for the presidential and National Assembly elections ahead of the deadline.

“As of close of work on Monday, nine political parties have collected the access code for the national elections,” Haruna said.

He listed the parties as the Accord, Action Alliance, African Democratic Congress, All Progressives Congress, Labour Party, National Democratic Congress, National Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party and Social Democratic Party.

INEC explained that it is the responsibility of political parties to initiate the process of collecting the access codes, noting that the commission does not distribute them directly to party offices.

Haruna further stated that any individual collecting on behalf of a party must present a formal authorisation letter from the party leadership, reinforcing procedural safeguards around the nomination process.

The commission also reminded parties that it had already conducted training sessions for party officials on the use of its nomination portal, urging full compliance with established guidelines.

“InEC has been generous by extending the deadline from close of work to midnight of the deadline date. If any political party decides to wait until the deadline, INEC cannot be blamed for that,” Haruna warned.

The development comes as the commission continues preparations for the 2027 general elections, with the nomination window for presidential and National Assembly candidates running from 27 June to 11 July 2026.

INEC added that submission of governorship and state assembly nominations is scheduled for 18 July to 8 August 2026, as part of its broader electoral timetable.

The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and orderliness in the electoral process, urging political parties to avoid last-minute rushes that could disrupt candidate registration.
