Ex-Senator Gershom Bassey resigns from PDP, citing persistent crises, deep divisions, and unresolved conflicts in the party ahead of 2027 elections
Former Cross River South Senatorial District representative, Gershom Bassey, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party citing unresolved internal conflicts and ongoing crises.
Bassey, a former governorship aspirant in Cross River State, described his decision as made “with a heavy heart,” noting that recent developments within the party made it difficult to remain optimistic about its future.

In a resignation letter dated March 12, 2026, he addressed the PDP leadership in Ward 9, Calabar South Local Government Area, expressing concern over the continued splits that weakened party unity and eroded its founding values.
“The most recent crisis has unfortunately made it clear that the party is drifting further away from the ideals that once bound us together,” Bassey said. He further criticized party elders for their apparent unwillingness to restore discipline, unity, and vision.
