Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara jokes lawmakers sent him a “love letter” amid impeachment threats, sparking public debate and political reactions

The Assembly has moved to impeach the governor, citing repeated breaches of the constitution.
President Bola Tinubu has twice intervened to halt the process, including during a state of emergency that suspended the governor, deputy, and lawmakers for six months.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atoyebi Paul, criticised the party’s support for Fubara, noting that the Rivers votes had historically been secured by Nyesom Wike’s political network.
Public reactions to Fubara’s comments are divided. Joel Dappa suggested the governor contradicts himself: “In court, he claimed no impeachment notice was received, yet here he admits receiving a ‘love letter.’ That’s a clear contradiction.”
Others, like Comrade Iba Monso, commended Fubara’s political maneuvering, while some argued he was stirring tension rather than fostering peace in the state.
The controversy comes amid other political tensions, including the police inviting Fubara’s ally, Tammy Danagogo, over an alleged assassination plot targeting FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
