Rivers Governor Fubara joins APC, strengthening South-South alignment

Rivers State Governor Fubara joins APC, completing South-South alignment and pledging support for Tinubu and the party ahead of 2027 elections

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has described the defection of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara into the party as a major development, completing the alignment of the South-South region with the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fubara, who officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on December 9, 2025, visited the APC National Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday evening, where he was received by the party’s National Working Committee, led by Yilwatda, alongside Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo (SAN).

The governor and APC leaders pledged to collaborate in ensuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the party secure victory across all levels in 2027.

Fubara’s defection followed similar moves by key members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who also joined the APC, effectively ending his ties with the PDP and positioning him as a leading figure in the state for the ruling party.

Addressing the NWC, Fubara said his visit was aimed at familiarising himself with the party’s operations and assuring leaders of his commitment to strengthening APC.

“I can’t belong to a house without first coming into the house and understanding how it is arranged. I felt it would be proper for me to visit the national secretariat today to familiarise myself with the members and the operations,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of party success being tied to that of President Tinubu, adding, “We are already showing evidence of success in my state through our deliverables and the number of people affirming their support.”

Responding on behalf of the NWC, Prof. Yilwatda, through APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, welcomed Fubara and described his defection as completing the party’s circle in the South-South region.

He said, “We are very happy that you have decided to join because, with your orientation, you are progressive and true, and you complete the circle for us in the South-South.

For political watchers, having the South in any party represents more than half the party’s strength. The party’s power has increased significantly with your arrival.”

Yilwatda added that APC is building a disciplined, leadership-driven party and expressed confidence that Fubara’s support would help secure victory in the 2027 elections.
