FCT Elections Begin Amid Heated Political Contest

FCT Elections commence in Abuja as ADC, APC, and PDP compete for chairmanship and councillor positions amid tight security and high stakes

Residents of Abuja will tomorrow, Saturday, February 21, 2025, cast their votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections to elect chairmen and councillors across six area councils: Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, and Kwali.

The elections present a major test for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), supported by opposition figures including Peter Obi and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

ADC chairmanship candidate for AMAC, Dr. Moses Paul, described his candidacy as the result of years of grassroots engagement.

“Preparation for leadership does not begin a few days before an election. It is built over time through service and sacrifice. For years, I have walked these streets and listened to the people. I am fully prepared mentally, structurally, and spiritually to serve from day one,” Dr. Paul said.

He emphasised that the election is about accountability and competence for residents, not personal ambition.

“This election is no longer about me. It is about AMAC deciding it deserves dignity and accountable leadership,” he added.

When asked about working with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike if elected, Dr. Paul highlighted the importance of collaboration.

“Leadership is not about ego; it is about responsibility. I will work with every lawful authority in the interest of our people. But my loyalty will always be to the people of AMAC,” he said.

Residents across Abuja expressed varied expectations. Market trader Aisha Abdulkadir said, “We are tired of leaders who come during campaigns and then disappear.”

Provision seller Joy Okon added, “I just want someone who knows what they are doing, not somebody that just wants to enter politics for power.”

Other voters emphasised the need for practical improvements in roads, water supply, and security.

Security has been tightened for the elections, with the FCT police imposing a 12-hour restriction of movement from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. to ensure smooth voting.

The elections have also seen political shifts.

Minister Nyesom Wike, while still a PDP member, has publicly endorsed candidates supporting President Bola Tinubu’s vision.

His backing reportedly influenced PDP chairmanship candidates Julius Adamu of Bwari and Hon. Zadna Dantani of AMAC to withdraw in favour of APC contenders Joshua Ishaku Musa and Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, respectively.
