APC Reassures Supporters After Adamu’s Defection

The APC in Nasarawa State has sent a strong message to supporters of former IGP Abubakar Adamu following his defection to the SDP after losing the governorship primary

In Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday 18 June 2026, the All Progressives Congress state Chairman, Aliyu Bello, appealed for calm among supporters of former Inspector-General of Police Abubakar Adamu after the latter defected to the Social Democratic Party following his loss in the APC governorship primary.

The former police chief, Abubakar Adamu, recently dumped the ruling party after losing to Senator Ahmed Wadada in the keenly contested primary.

Speaking at a well-attended rally in Angwan Gayam, Gayam Electoral Ward, Aliyu Bello assured party faithful that the defection would not harm the APC’s prospects in the 2027 elections.

“Brooms can be burnt, but the achievements and impacts of our party in the state and the ideology behind the broom cannot be burnt,” Bello said, condemning reports of some Adamu loyalists burning the APC symbol in protest.

The APC chairman urged remaining supporters of the ex-IGP to accept the primary outcome in good faith, stressing that political power ultimately comes from God.

He highlighted the party’s strong record under Governor Abdullahi Sule, citing infrastructural development, youth empowerment, job creation, and peaceful coexistence, alongside federal projects delivered by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“It is also built on the massive federal government presence delivered by President Bola Tinubu and that is what the people vote for, not just a symbol,” Bello added.

This Abubakar Adamu defection comes amid growing intra-party tensions in Nasarawa State as politicians position themselves for the 2027 polls.

The former IGP had been a prominent contender within the APC before the primary outcome prompted his exit.

Other party leaders at the rally, including Lafia Local Government Area Deputy Chairman Uba Arikya and chieftain Sidi Ndagi, echoed calls for unity and focus on good governance rather than political incitement.
