Prof. Onyebuchi Kanario of FMC Umuahia elected Vice Chairman of the Committee of Chief Medical Directors, boosting leadership in Nigeria’s federal hospitals
Professor Onyebuchi Azubuike Kanario, Chief Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, has been elected Vice Chairman of the Committee of Chief Medical Directors of Federal Tertiary Hospitals in Nigeria, ABN TV reports.

The election concluded on Thursday in Keffi, with the inauguration of the newly elected executives currently underway.
Professor Kanario’s appointment has been widely described as “a round peg in a round hole,” reflecting his extensive professional experience, administrative competence, and proven leadership in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
The Committee of CMDs serves as a strategic coordinating body for federal tertiary hospitals nationwide, providing direction, policy engagement, and collaboration among hospital chief executives.
Stakeholders say Prof. Kanario’s election holds promise for FMC Umuahia and the advancement of tertiary healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
Under his leadership, FMC Umuahia has achieved notable infrastructural expansion, improved service delivery, and enhanced institutional credibility, attracting increased stakeholder confidence and federal constituency projects.
Professor Sahad Ahmed, Chief Medical Director of FMC Jabi, Abuja, was elected Chairman of the Committee of CMDs and will lead the committee alongside Prof. Kanario and other elected executives.
Healthcare experts anticipate that the new leadership will strengthen collaboration among federal tertiary hospitals, improve policy implementation, and further enhance service delivery nationwide.
