PDP factional chairman seeks Trump intervention amid crisis

PDP crisis Nigeria: Kabiru Turaki appeals to Trump and global leaders as rival factions clash violently in Abuja

Kabiru Turaki, the newly elected factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, has called on United States President Donald Trump and the international community to intervene in Nigeria’s worsening political situation.

Turaki made the appeal on Tuesday outside the party’s national secretariat at Wadata Plaza, citing a severe internal crisis that he said has placed the nation’s democracy “under threat.”

Turaki accused the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike of mobilising armed thugs to obstruct party activities and prevent his faction from accessing the secretariat.

“I want to call on President Trump. What is at stake is not just genocide against Christians; he should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat. I am calling all other developed nations, all advanced democracies, come and save Nigeria,” he said.

He further stated that his faction’s leaders were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to defend the party’s mandate and the country’s democracy.

“I have said it, we are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect democracy and to protect our mandate,” Turaki added.

The appeal came shortly before violent clashes erupted at the secretariat.

Both the Turaki-led National Working Committee and the Wike-backed group led by factional National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu had scheduled parallel National Executive Committee and Board of Trustees meetings on the same day.

The confrontation led to the use of teargas, causing panic among party members, staff, and journalists.

Outside the building, supporters from both camps continued to fight, further intensifying the standoff and highlighting deep divisions within the opposition party.
