President Bola Tinubu made the remarks at the opening of the 2025 All Nigerian Judges’ Conference of the Superior Courts in Abuja, stressing that judicial officers carry the profound responsibility of safeguarding fairness in a fragile democracy.
He pledged sustained investment in welfare, training and the National Judicial Institute, insisting that continuous learning and ethical renewal must shape the modern Bench.
Yet he warned that no reform can succeed without unwavering integrity, declaring that justice must never be for sale and the courts must never become a sanctuary for compromise. He added that corruption anywhere weakens the nation, but corruption in the Judiciary strikes at its very core.
Tinubu said judicial discipline must be firm and transparent, emphasising that protecting the courts’ reputation is a duty shared by every judicial officer, not merely the National Judicial Council.
He described the growing backlog of cases and the slow pace of justice delivery as unacceptable and damaging to democratic stability.
According to him, Nigerians are increasingly frustrated by delayed judgments, questionable conduct and the difficulty of accessing justice.
He noted that these perceptions, justified or not, demand honest reflection, decisive action and a bold reform agenda that restores public confidence.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening judicial capacity nationwide through improved infrastructure, better working conditions and modern tools.
He stressed that technology must play a central role, with digitisation and integrated case management forming the backbone of future reforms.
He said that support must be tangible, with a digital and transparent judiciary serving as a powerful tool for accountability.
Tinubu urged judges to implement measures that reduce congestion in courts, reinforce discipline and make justice more affordable and accessible.
