Babatunde Adeyemo warns of corruption pushback

Babatunde Adeyemo has warned that entrenched corrupt interests are actively pushing back against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, both within Nigeria and abroad.

The anti-corruption advocate made the remarks during a 5km walk against corruption in Abeokuta, organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission.

The walk, part of the ‘Zero Tolerance for Corruption in Nigeria’ campaign, saw participation from Oba Alexander Olusegun MacGregor, the Kabiyesi of Orile Ilawo, and NYSC members. It began at the MKO Abiola International Stadium and concluded at the Iwe Iroyin Press Centre.

Adeyemo highlighted that recent economic reforms—including subsidy removal, a more stable exchange rate, reduced oil theft, and the introduction of oil import tariffs—have made Nigeria less vulnerable to corrupt manipulation. He described these reforms as the reason corruption is “fighting back.”

He criticised attempts by certain groups to portray Nigeria as engaging in targeted attacks on Christians, stressing that insecurity affects communities across religions. Adeyemo urged citizens, particularly the youth, to recognise and support the administration’s achievements.

“Corruption is pushing back locally and internationally,” he said. “Unfortunately, many of our youths who should appreciate these reforms are not seeing the progress being made. We need proper orientation, especially among young people.”

Adeyemo also praised reforms in foreign exchange management, which now allow Nigerians to use Naira cards abroad, restoring confidence among banks and international partners.
