The Nigerian President hailed Odinga as a democratic icon and Pan-African visionary, whose lifelong commitment to justice and unity shaped Kenya’s political evolution.
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to President William Ruto and the Kenyan people, describing Odinga as a leader whose influence reached well beyond East Africa.
“His legacy will endure in the institutions he helped to shape and the democratic ideals he championed. We mourn with Kenya in this moment of national grief,” Tinubu stated.
President Tinubu emphasised Odinga’s powerful role in promoting inclusive governance and fostering political reconciliation during Kenya’s most turbulent years.
Odinga, who served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, emerged as a key figure in pan-African dialogue, often advocating for regional stability, electoral integrity, and socio-economic equity.
“Raila Odinga stood firm for the rights of ordinary people and never wavered in his pursuit of democratic reform,” Tinubu said, adding that his death is a great loss to Africa.
According to Indian authorities, Odinga collapsed while walking in the southern state of Kerala with close family and security personnel.
Despite being rushed to hospital, he was confirmed dead on arrival. The cause of death is yet to be publicly disclosed.
A senior aide from Odinga’s political party, the Orange Democratic Movement, also confirmed the development, pending an official statement from the Kenyan government.
Tinubu’s message extended beyond condolence, urging African leaders to honour Odinga’s legacy by deepening commitments to democracy, transparency, and cooperation.
