Northern CAN Voter Registration Call Urges Mass Participation

Northern CAN voter registration call urges Nigerians to register, vote, and reject apathy as INEC’s Continuous Voter Registration continues nationwide

Northern CAN voter registration call has been issued as a passionate plea by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, urging citizens to take full advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. John Hayab emphasized that voter registration is not just a political action but a civic and moral duty.

He said Nigerians must overcome doubts and excuses that lead to apathy and low electoral turnout.

“Our votes count. If votes were useless, no one would attempt to buy them. Nigerians should understand that the real power lies in the ballot and not in money shared during elections,” Hayab stated.

The Northern CAN voter registration call also extended to religious leaders, urging them to use their platforms to mobilize congregants for action.

Hayab stressed that faith-based communities play a critical role in civic education and mass participation.

He also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend access to CVR centres by bringing them closer to rural and hard-to-reach communities, ensuring no eligible voter is disenfranchised due to location.

The ongoing CVR exercise officially began online on August 18, 2025, with physical registration starting on August 25, 2025 It will run until August 30, 2026 across 811 INEC offices nationwide.

According to INEC, over 1.3 million Nigerians have already pre-registered online, with youths aged 18 to 34 making up the majority.

The CVR covers new registration transfer of voting location and replacement of lost or damaged cards, while the Commission warns that multiple registration is illegal.

Rev. Hayab particularly encouraged youths and women to view registration as an investment in the country’s future.

“Selling your vote is selling your conscience and your tomorrow. We must reject inducements and stand firm for a Nigeria built on justice, peace, and progress,” he warned.
