Davido Osun election comments draw attention after the singer says he “stood alone” while supporting his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke
Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has responded to criticism surrounding his role in the 2026 Osun State governorship election, saying on Monday, 17 August 2026, that he “stood alone” while supporting his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The singer made the remarks on his verified X account following Governor Adeleke’s victory over All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji.
Davido said he had not bought anyone or received support from others while backing members of his family during the election.
“I brought no one. No one defended me. I backed my family on my own. I have done my job,” the singer wrote.
He also expressed a critical view of Nigerian politics, saying he did not want to be involved in the country’s political system until he believed it had improved.
“Nigerian politics is evil and I don’t want to be a part of it till God helps us,” Davido added.
His comments come after a closely contested Osun election in which Governor Adeleke secured a second term under the Accord Party.
Adeleke polled 511,067 votes, defeating Oyebamiji, the APC candidate, who received 444,815 votes. The governor won by 66,252 votes and secured victories in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas.
The result marked another significant moment in the political career of Adeleke, who won his first term in 2022 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
The governor subsequently left the PDP amid the party’s prolonged internal crisis and joined the Accord Party in November 2025 before seeking re-election.
Davido had openly supported his uncle during the campaign, using his considerable public profile to draw attention to Adeleke’s bid for a second term.
His involvement was closely watched because of the Adeleke family’s established political influence in Osun and Davido’s own enormous following in Nigeria and internationally.
The singer’s latest comments appear to address criticism over the extent of his political involvement and the support he received during the campaign.
His statement that he “stood alone” also reflects the personal dimension of his support for Adeleke, whom he has consistently backed as a member of his family.
The Osun election was held against a tense political backdrop, with reports of violence and intimidation recorded during the campaign and voting period.
Despite those concerns, election observers broadly described the process as orderly, while some raised questions about vote buying, voter inducement and aspects of electoral technology.
The APC has also indicated that it is reviewing the results before deciding whether to pursue a legal challenge.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, however, congratulated Adeleke following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration and said the result reflected the will of the people.
For Davido, the latest comments suggest that his immediate interest is in distancing himself from the broader political environment while maintaining that he fulfilled his role in supporting his family.

His intervention has added a personal voice to the post-election conversation, as attention shifts from the campaign to Adeleke’s second term and the political implications of his victory ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
