Benue House of Assembly Suspends Four Lawmakers Over Impeachment Plot

The affected members include Alfred Berger (Makurdi North), Terna Shimawua (Kian), Cyril Ekong (Obi), and James Umoru (Apa).

According to reports, the suspended lawmakers allegedly conspired on Thursday night to remove the Speaker.

The development was raised during plenary on Friday after the Majority Leader, Saater Tiseer, moved a motion of urgent importance calling for their suspension.

Tiseer accused the four legislators of attempting to destabilize the Assembly with what he described as a “needless crisis.”

His motion was upheld, and Speaker Dajoh immediately directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to escort the suspended members out of the chambers.

In a related shake-up, the Speaker appointed Audu Elias as the new spokesperson of the Assembly, replacing Berger, who previously held the role.

The Benue Assembly has been in a tense standoff with Governor Hyacinth Alia since its inauguration, raising speculation that the suspensions may be connected to the ongoing political tussle.

However, it remains unclear if the latest crisis is directly linked to the Assembly’s rift with the governor.
