Balami dumps APC for the Accord Party, the Borno House member says, after a June resignation over what he called opaque primaries
Usman Midala Balami, member of the House of Representatives for Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency in Borno State and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Communications, has left the All Progressives Congress for the Accord Party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has listed him as the Accord candidate for that seat.
He dated his resignation 15 June 2026, in a letter to the APC endorsed by his ward chairman in Hawul Local Government Area. “After due consultations with leaders across political parties, as well as friends, family and loved ones, I have found it necessary to tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress with immediate effect,” the letter said.
Usman Midala Balami said he walked because the party failed to run “credible, free, fair and transparent primary elections” and denied aspirants an equal chance. He said he did not take part in the APC primary.
He thanked the party for the platform that let him serve and said the years there still shaped his public work. On the Accord ticket he thanked party leaders and constituents and said he would build on constituency projects if voters return him.
Defections of this kind are now a 2027 drumbeat. One House member changing colours does not move Borno’s map by itself.
The APC still holds the federal centre and much of the North-East machinery. Accord is a smaller vehicle. The useful facts are narrower: a sitting member put a grievance about primaries on paper, INEC has printed another name on another list, and Askira-Uba/Hawul will have at least two stories on the ballot.

Whether Balami dumps APC in a way that travels beyond his wards depends on organisation, not the letterhead. He has a ticket. He still has to win the seat.
