Buba Galadima Admits Obi-Kwankwaso Ticket Faces Challenges

Buba Galadima Obi-Kwankwaso ticket remarks acknowledge challenges but express confidence the proposed alliance can overcome them

Buba Galadima, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has acknowledged that efforts to build support for a proposed Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso presidential ticket are facing challenges, but said the obstacles are not beyond resolution.

Galadima made the remarks during an appearance on Prime Time on Arise Television on Wednesday, where he expressed confidence that continued engagement would strengthen the proposed alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.

“We have a lot of problems. We are having a lot of problems, but the problems are not insurmountable. We will overcome those problems,” Galadima said.

Drawing a comparison with international diplomacy, Galadima argued that political disagreements should not prevent dialogue or cooperation.

“Let me give you one typical example. There is a war right now going on in the Middle East between America and Iran, but at the same time, they are on the negotiation table,” he said, adding that negotiation remains possible even between longstanding rivals.

Galadima also appealed to Nigerians not to hold Peter Obi responsible for events surrounding the 1966 military coup, arguing that individuals should not be judged for historical events in which they played no part.

“Did Obi? How old was Obi in 1966? How would he carry the cross of those who did it?” Galadima asked.

The NDC chieftain cited the late Biafran leader, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, as an example of post-war reconciliation, noting that Ojukwu was later pardoned, returned to Nigeria and participated in the country’s democratic process after the civil war.

Galadima further argued that conversations about the 1966 crisis should acknowledge that casualties were suffered across different ethnic communities, including the Igbo, rather than focusing on a single narrative.

He maintained that lasting national unity would require Nigerians to move beyond historical grievances and embrace reconciliation through constructive political engagement.

The comments come amid continued discussions over possible opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

While no formal agreement has been announced between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, political leaders and stakeholders have continued consultations on coalition options that could reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.

Galadima’s remarks add to the ongoing national debate over coalition-building, historical reconciliation and the role of dialogue in addressing Nigeria’s longstanding political and ethnic divisions.
