Democracy Must Be Respected, Yagba APC Leaders Back Abejide’s Candidacy

Yagba APC Abejide candidacy backing intensifies as leaders insist Leke Abejide’s primary win must stand and unity be preserved in Kogi APC

Party leaders, elected officials and senior chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, across Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State, in Yagba, publicly backed the emergence of Leke Abejide as the party’s candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election, insisting that the outcome of the primary election reflects the true will of party members.

The leaders, operating under the Leke Abejide Support Group, LASG, rejected claims challenging the process, describing them as politically motivated efforts to undermine what they termed a legitimate and democratic decision.

Yagba APC Abejide candidacy backing was announced during a joint statement signed by prominent figures including the Kogi State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Femi Fanwo, alongside chairmen of Yagba West, Yagba East and Mopamuro local government areas, as well as other party leaders and grassroots mobilisers.

The stakeholders insisted that Abejide’s emergence was neither imposed nor inherited, stressing that he participated fully in a transparent primary election and secured overwhelming support from delegates across the constituency.

They further noted that opposition to the outcome stemmed from individuals who supported rival aspirants during the contest but were unable to secure victory at the polls.

According to the leaders, any attempt to overturn the result through public agitation or media pressure amounts to an attack on internal party democracy and must be firmly resisted.

They also addressed concerns around zoning arrangements, arguing that such political understandings cannot override constitutional rights or the democratic choice of party members.

The group maintained that democracy must remain rooted in fairness and inclusion, warning against practices that could weaken party unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Highlighting Abejide’s performance in office, the leaders pointed to scholarship programmes, youth and women empowerment schemes, and infrastructure projects spread across communities in Yagba Federal Constituency.

They also referenced a community development initiative through which more than 70 communities reportedly received ₦10 million each to execute local projects, describing it as evidence of impactful leadership.

The stakeholders said constituents are now more focused on development outcomes than political sentiment, adding that Abejide’s record has strengthened his acceptance across the constituency.

“The people are interested in results. They are interested in impact. They are interested in leaders who understand their needs and have demonstrated the capacity to meet them,” the statement read.

The leaders urged aggrieved members to accept the outcome of the primary election, warning that continued dispute could threaten party cohesion and weaken electoral prospects.

They reaffirmed that the APC primary process had produced a clear winner and described the outcome as final, urging all stakeholders to embrace unity and move forward.

“The party members have spoken. The people have spoken. Democracy has spoken, and its verdict deserves respect,” they declared.
