Confusion gripped the House of Representatives on Tuesday after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read a formal letter announcing the Kingsley Chinda defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that immediately reshaped the leadership structure of the lower chamber.

Kingsley Chinda, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives and a prominent lawmaker from Rivers State, was declared to have defected during plenary proceedings presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The announcement was made shortly after the House resumed sitting following the Sallah break.
The Kingsley Chinda defection is particularly significant as it comes after he had already emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, deepening political realignment within the state’s power structure ahead of the 2027 election cycle.
However, the defection letter read on the floor of the House was dated April 23, 2026, raising questions among lawmakers over the timing and circumstances surrounding the political switch.
Following the announcement, Kingsley Chinda subsequently resigned his position as Minority Leader, marking a decisive and dramatic shift in the leadership of the opposition bloc in the House.
The resignation is expected to trigger the election of a new Minority Leader in the coming days, as the chamber moves to stabilise its leadership arrangement after the unexpected development.
A notable secondary development is that Kingsley Chinda is currently facing a legal challenge over claims that his defection did not follow due process, adding a further layer of controversy to the political transition.
Political observers describe the situation as a powerful realignment within the House of Representatives, with potential implications for party balance and legislative negotiations going forward.
While no formal objection was raised during plenary, the unusual presentation of the dated defection letter has fuelled quiet debate among lawmakers about internal party coordination and procedural clarity.
