Alkali announced his withdrawal in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, saying the decision followed extensive consultations with key political stakeholders.
The retired police chief noted that he engaged in discussions with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, and elders from neighbouring Borno State before stepping down from the contest.
According to him, the move was taken in the interest of unity, stability and progress within the ruling party and the state.
Baba Usman Alkali Yobe governorship withdrawal marks a notable shift in the APC primaries, which have seen increasing internal realignments ahead of the party’s final selection process.
“After due consultations and exhaustive meetings with the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON, the Executive Governors of Yobe and Borno state, elders and political associates, as well as some very critical stakeholders across the seventeen Local Government Areas, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration,” he said.
He urged his supporters to remain calm, law-abiding and committed to the party’s broader objectives while backing whoever eventually emerges as the flagbearer.
Alkali was among six aspirants who earlier rejected the emergence of Baba Malam Wali as consensus candidate and had pushed for direct primaries in line with party guidelines.

Following his withdrawal, alongside Lawan Kolo Geidam, the number of contenders has reduced, further reshaping the APC governorship race in Yobe State.
