Strong indications have emerged that key stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State have reportedly backed Dr Debo Akande for the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday.

Oyo PDP endorses Debo Akande governorship bid follows a series of closed-door consultations among party leaders, which insiders say have reshaped the internal race for the party’s top ticket.
Although earlier reports suggested that governorship aspirants Bimbo Adekanmbi and Shared Akinade Fijabi were favoured by party leaders during deliberations, sources familiar with the meeting have dismissed such claims as misleading and inconsistent with what actually transpired.
According to party insiders, Dr Akande consistently maintained a leading position throughout the consultation process, gradually consolidating support among influential stakeholders.
He was said to have secured three votes in the initial caucus discussion before increasing his tally in subsequent sessions, eventually gaining overwhelming backing when the consultation expanded to 21 stakeholders.
Oyo PDP moves to back Debo Akande for governorship ticket, was reportedly driven by factors such as his perceived competence, party loyalty, and longstanding involvement in governance and political structures within the state.
A former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Monsurat Sunmonu, was also reported to have openly supported Akande’s candidacy during the discussions, describing him as a committed figure who has made significant contributions to the current administration.
Despite the reported consensus, sources claimed there are emerging efforts by some political interests to alter the outcome of the consultations in favour of another aspirant ahead of the primaries.
Supporters of Dr Akande maintain that he remains the most credible and widely acceptable candidate, citing his grassroots appeal and sustained engagement within the party structure.
