Hashim Resignation marks the end of his association with the opposition party after years of political engagement within its ranks, signalling a significant development within the PDP’s internal dynamics.
In his letter, the businessman and human rights activist cited deep internal divisions and failed reconciliation efforts as the primary reasons for his decision.
He described the party as being engulfed in persistent crises for over a year, leading to what he characterised as factionalisation into two dominant camps.
Olawepo Hashim expressed concern that repeated attempts at peace had not yielded meaningful results, stating that remaining within the party would, in his view, contradict his principles.
He emphasised that he could not, in good conscience, be complicit in actions that undermine democratic values.
He further suggested that the ongoing instability could hinder the PDP’s ability to present credible candidates in future elections, or reduce it to a passive role within Nigeria’s political landscape.
His remarks reflect growing unease among some stakeholders about the party’s cohesion and long term direction.
The Olawepo Hashim Resignation also included broader reflections on Nigeria’s political and socio economic challenges.
He pointed to issues such as insecurity, economic strain and rising poverty, arguing that these conditions demand a more unified and principled political response from leaders and institutions.
Olawepo Hashim stated that it would be inconsistent with his convictions to remain aligned with any arrangement that appears to legitimise or sustain such conditions.
He also referenced what he described as widespread insecurity across multiple regions and the continued loss of lives due to violence.
In his closing remarks, he criticised the internal state of the PDP, describing it as a once influential party weakened by internal divisions and competing interests.
He expressed disappointment that individuals who benefited from public office within the party had contributed to its current challenges.
Olawepo Hashim concluded that stepping aside was necessary to pursue a new political direction, indicating his intention to collaborate with other like minded individuals committed to democratic governance, national stability and economic progress.
