ADC says Sahel states, including Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, left ECOWAS due to mismanagement of regional relations by President Bola Tinubu
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has attributed the departure of Sahel states—Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso from the Economic Community of West African States to mismanagement of diplomatic relations by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said in an interview on Channels Television that the once cooperative ECOWAS collaboration to combat terrorism in the Sahel region has deteriorated into “all man for himself,” allowing terrorism to flourish.
He highlighted that Nigeria ranked fourth on the 2025 Global Terrorism Index, following Pakistan, Burkina Faso, and Niger, emphasizing that the country’s ability to lead West Africa depends on its capacity to safeguard its citizens.

Abdullahi stressed, “As long as Nigeria is not able to protect and defend its own people, it cannot lead any claim to leadership in West African region or Africa as a whole.”
