PDP Factions May Reconcile After Court Appeal Ruling

PDP factions may reconcile after Court of Appeal ruling, as party leaders discuss strategy and unity ahead of the 2027 elections

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has indicated that the party’s two warring factions may finally reconcile following the Court of Appeal ruling on Tuesday.

The development emerged during a meeting convened by the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) and the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT).

Sani highlighted that reconciliation was among the key issues raised, emphasising that the party must embrace the Court of Appeal’s directive.

The former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, also urged the factions to bury their differences to ensure the PDP remains a credible contender in the 2027 elections.

Addressing questions on a possible national convention, Sani explained that a second convention would amount to “double jeopardy,” as the court had already confirmed the suspension of the faction claiming authority to organise it.

He said the NWC and BoT formulated three potential strategies, including the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court and pursuing reconciliation as recommended by the appellate court.

Sani added that the third option reconciliation aligns with the party’s broader interests, with decisions expected to be finalised at the expanded meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC).
