Protesters Demand Probe of El-Rufai N432bn Allegations

Protesters demand a transparent investigation into former Kaduna Governor El-Rufai’s N432bn corruption case

Protesters under the Mega National Movement for Good Governance on Monday stormed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) headquarters in Abuja, demanding a thorough investigation into former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s alleged N432 billion corruption case.

The demonstrators chanted slogans and displayed placards reading “Answer The Charges El-Rufai” and “El-Rufai Not Above The Law,” calling for accountability and transparency.

Addressing journalists, the group’s spokesman, Muhammad Abdullahi, stressed that the allegations should not be politicised.

“This issue is about accountability and stewardship of public trust,” he said, citing concerns raised in the Kaduna State House of Assembly Ad-Hoc Committee Report (2024) regarding financial management, public debt, and contract procedures under El-Rufai’s administration.

Abdullahi noted that some former appointees and allies, including Jafaru Sani, Jimmy Lawal, Bashir Saidu, and Samuel Aruwa, are already under investigation or in custody.

He urged the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to carry out a “thorough, evidence-driven, and transparent investigation in accordance with constitutional provisions.”

“The courtroom remains the proper venue for vindication,” he added.

“If El-Rufai is confident in his integrity, he should allow the judicial process to run its full course.”

Responding to the protest, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale appealed for calm, assuring demonstrators that their petition would be forwarded to the executive chairman.

“The EFCC recognises the right of Nigerians to lawful protest. Your grievances will be communicated, and the commission will act professionally to address all raised issues,” Oyewale said.
