Segun Sowunmi, a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain, made the declaration during an interactive Zoom session with supporters and journalists on February 4.
The former Atiku Abubakar aide said persistent development lapses across Ogun State informed the decision to join the 2027 governorship race.
Segun Sowunmi Ogun governorship ambition, he explained, is driven by the need to confront insecurity, weak education systems and poor healthcare delivery.
“As a critical stakeholder who has always been there, I have continued to offer support,” Segun Sowunmi said.
“At this critical time, I am coming forward with the best ideas for governance in our dear state.”
He criticised the lack of policy continuity, describing it as a major setback to sustainable development in Ogun State.
Segun Sowunmi said successive administrations failed to maximise economic opportunities created by the state’s strategic proximity to Lagos State.
“We need to design Ogun not to work for the person in Oke-Mosan,” Segun Sowunmi said.
“It must work for every person in the nooks and crannies of the state.”
He described the state of public healthcare infrastructure as embarrassing and unacceptable for a state of Ogun’s profile.
Segun Sowunmi cited Sacred Heart Hospital in Abeokuta as an example of neglect that undermines the state’s potential.
“There is no reason why Ogun should not be the healthcare capital of the South-West,” Segun Sowunmi added.
On party politics, Segun Sowunmi expressed concern over the lingering crises within the Peoples Democratic Party.

He said he is closely monitoring developments across political parties and will soon announce his platform.
