Igbo Agenda Dialogue Warns of Crisis Over 2027 Election Manipulation

Igbo Agenda Dialogue warns that any attempt to manipulate the 2027 elections could trigger crisis, urging INEC and stakeholders to ensure credible polls

A pro-democracy and non-partisan socio-political organisation, the Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD), has warned that any attempt to manipulate the 2027 general elections could plunge Nigeria into a major crisis capable of undermining national stability and democratic progress.

The group issued the warning in a statement released on Monday titled “Message to all the presidential candidates for the 2027 presidential election,” jointly signed by its Convener and National Chairman, Chief Chekwas Okorie, and Executive Secretary, Jonathan Elendu.

While congratulating presidential candidates across various political parties, the organisation urged political actors, electoral officials and security agencies to conduct themselves responsibly before, during and after the polls.

It stressed that the 2027 presidential election is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive in Nigeria’s democratic history, calling on stakeholders to prioritise issues over divisive rhetoric.

The group warned that inflammatory statements and actions by political actors could heighten existing tensions in an already fragile national environment.

“We urge the politicians and their supporters to remain focused on issues and eschew the resort to acerbic and inflammatory rhetoric,” the statement said.

According to the Igbo Agenda Dialogue, many of the presidential candidates’ acceptance speeches have shown general agreement on key national concerns, including security, development and unity.

However, the organisation expressed concern over worsening socio-economic pressures and insecurity across parts of the country, warning that recklessness could worsen the situation.

It cautioned that Nigeria currently has several flashpoints and urged all stakeholders to act with restraint and responsibility.

“Nigeria currently has several flash points, and the citizens are restive at this time as a result of many existential challenges,” the group stated.

The organisation also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a credible, transparent and fair electoral process that would command public trust.

It stressed that the credibility of the election would be closely watched both locally and internationally.

“The Independent National Electoral Commission has the onerous task to deliver to Nigerians credible, transparent, free, and fair elections. Nigerians expect nothing less. The world is watching,” it added.

The group further urged security agencies to remain neutral and professional throughout the electoral process, warning against any form of interference that could compromise the integrity of the polls.

As part of its civic engagement efforts, the organisation announced a nationwide voter mobilisation campaign aimed at encouraging eligible Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process.

It urged citizens to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise ahead of the 2027 elections.

TheDialogue also called on civil society organisations and community groups to intensify voter education and participation campaigns across the country.

In its strongest warning, the group stated that any attempt to undermine the will of the electorate could trigger severe consequences for national peace and stability.

“Finally, we wish to caution that any attempt to manipulate the electoral process or to shortchange the electorate during and after the elections may result in an uncontrollable anarchy that may threaten the very foundation of our country,” it warned.
