Wike predicts an easy 2027 victory for Tinubu, dismissing the opposition coalition and saying the President will return to the Villa without pressure
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure another term in office in the 2027 presidential election, saying the emerging opposition coalition does not pose a serious threat to the incumbent.

Wike made the assessment during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, while discussing the developing political alliances and preparations for the next general election.
The former Rivers State governor predicted that Tinubu would face little pressure during the contest and would return to the Presidential Villa after the election.
“This will be an election where a president will be walking to the Villa with no pressure,” Wike said.
His comments come as opposition politicians and parties continue to explore new alliances ahead of the 2027 election.
Wike also addressed the Rainbow Coalition, describing it as a political platform focused on supporting Tinubu rather than advancing the interests of an individual politician.
“Rainbow coalition is not about one person. What is important is that we are supporting Mr President. No one party takes everything,” he said.
The minister’s remarks suggest that the coalition’s immediate objective is to consolidate political support around Tinubu as preparations for the next election intensify.
Wike also questioned the relevance and electoral strength of Nigeria’s opposition parties, arguing that their continued existence was driven largely by political necessity.
“Opposition parties exist because they need to exist. Ideally, there are no opposition parties,” he said.
His assessment extends to two prominent opposition figures, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.
Atiku is now associated with the African Democratic Congress, ADC, while Obi has emerged as a leading figure within the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC.
Wike questioned whether the two politicians had demonstrated sufficient electoral strength to challenge Tinubu nationally.
“Atiku is running under ADC, and Obi under NDC. What was their performance in Osun?” he asked.
The reference comes against the backdrop of the political activity surrounding the 2026 Osun governorship election, which has become part of the wider debate over the strength of Nigeria’s emerging political alignments.
The 2027 presidential contest is expected to be shaped by the ability of the major political camps to consolidate their support across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
Tinubu’s camp will be seeking to build on the coalition that brought the president to power in 2023, while opposition figures are working to create a broader platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The opposition’s efforts have included discussions around alliances involving politicians from different parties and political backgrounds.
Wike, however, maintained that the emerging coalition would not alter his assessment of Tinubu’s prospects.
The FCT minister also suggested that the coalition would reveal its next steps when the appropriate time arrives.
He assured supporters that whatever decision the group eventually takes would be implemented effectively.
“Whatever we decide to do, we will do it properly,” Wike said.
Wike’s comments represent a strong vote of confidence in Tinubu ahead of an election that is still months away.
The political landscape remains fluid, however, with candidates, parties and alliances continuing to reposition themselves.
While Wike sees little pressure facing Tinubu, the eventual strength of the opposition will depend on whether its emerging alliances can translate political agreements into a coherent national campaign and meaningful support among voters.
