Nyesom Wike leads Rivers lawmakers and council chairmen to meet Siminalayi Fubara as political reconciliation continues ahead of 2027
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Sunday led members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the 23 local government chairmen to a meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Port Harcourt.

The closed-door meeting, held at Fubara’s private residence, brought together key political figures associated with the former governor and the current governor as efforts to consolidate reconciliation in Rivers State continue.
The delegation included the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in the state, Kingsley Chinda.
Sunday’s engagement came about two weeks after Wike and members of the Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State, including Chinda, met with Fubara at the same residence.
It was also the first time Wike had visited Fubara at his private residence in Port Harcourt, according to reports.
Details of the latest meeting were not immediately made public.
However, reports indicate that the engagement was part of continuing efforts to strengthen reconciliation between the two political camps and build on previous discussions.
The meeting also comes against the backdrop of recent political realignments in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The relationship between Wike and Fubara became strained after Fubara assumed office as governor in 2023, leading to a prolonged political crisis involving the governor and members of the state House of Assembly.
The dispute triggered divisions within the Assembly, while lawmakers loyal to Wike initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara.
Tensions escalated in October 2023 when a fire damaged part of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex amid the political dispute.
The crisis eventually attracted federal intervention.
In March 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, resulting in the suspension of Fubara, his deputy and members of the state legislature.
The emergency administration was later lifted, allowing the elected officials to return to office.
Recent meetings between the two camps have since focused on rebuilding political ties and establishing a new working relationship.
Earlier in October, Wike, Chinda and other supporters met Fubara and his political camp in Port Harcourt in a meeting that lasted several hours.
That engagement was also described as part of efforts to consolidate reconciliation in the state.
The renewed engagement is taking place as political parties and influential blocs position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
Chinda has emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Rivers State, while Fubara has reportedly backed the Rainbow Coalition and endorsed Chinda as his preferred successor.
The involvement of the state lawmakers and all 23 local government chairmen in Sunday’s meeting further expands the political representation around the reconciliation process.
However, the long-term outcome of the talks remains unclear, particularly regarding the political interests of Fubara’s loyalists and how they will fit into the emerging arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.
