Wike-backed PDP bloc plans bold congress, convention push

The Wike-aligned PDP faction unveils a PDP congress plan as it prepares fresh caretaker committees and a national convention amid a deepening party rift

Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the factional Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike, announced on Sunday in Abuja that the bloc had activated a PDP congress plan to conduct state congresses and a national convention to elect new officials.

Senator Ohuabunwa made the disclosure during the opening session of the factional BoT meeting held at Nyesom Wike’s official residence in Life Camp.

He said preparations were underway to reorganise party structures in states troubled by internal disputes, beginning with the establishment of caretaker committees that would pave the way for transparent congresses and a credible convention.

He explained that the move aimed to rebuild trust, strengthen internal party mechanisms and keep the PDP aligned with what he called the values of fairness and inclusiveness in Nigeria’s political space.

Senator Ohuabunwa added that the BoT would fully support the factional National Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed to ensure that party affairs were managed in strict compliance with the law and PDP guidelines.

Senator Ohuabunwa said the BoT was bound by the PDP constitution to serve as a stabilising force, offering moral direction and shielding the party from divisive tendencies.

He urged members to remain committed to ongoing reforms, describing the period as a defining moment that required unity and discipline.

He called on BoT members to consolidate structural reforms ahead of upcoming political contests, insisting that the PDP must emerge stronger, more cohesive and better prepared for leadership responsibilities.

The senator praised members for what he described as their steadfastness and loyalty during a turbulent period for the opposition party.

Senator Ohuabunwa was elected factional BoT Chairman on 7 November following a meeting at Wike’s residence, where Ibrahim Dansidi was appointed board secretary.

The renewed convention plan intensifies the crisis within the PDP, as a rival bloc aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had in November held its own national convention in Ibadan, producing Turaki Taminu as national chairman.

The Ibadan gathering took place amid competing court orders both permitting and halting the exercise.

The Wike faction is currently in court seeking to nullify the Ibadan convention, marking the latest escalation in a conflict that has fractured the party’s leadership and left its future direction uncertain.
