In a condolence message released on Monday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu expressed sadness over the death of the Akran of Badagry, Oba Babatunde Akran, who died at 89.

The President extended sympathies to the Lagos State Government, the Lagos State Traditional Council, the Badagry Council of Chiefs, and the sons and daughters of the historic coastal kingdom.

According to the statement, Oba Menu-Toyi I provided “visionary and purposeful leadership” for more than 40 years, leaving a legacy of harmony, tolerance, unity, and prosperity.

His reign was noted for stability and the ability to unite diverse interests within the ancient kingdom.

President Tinubu particularly commended the late monarch’s role in protecting and promoting Badagry’s historical significance.

He noted that the town’s identity as a former slave harbour and its rich cultural heritage attracted global attention largely due to the monarch’s stewardship.

“The President acknowledges the wisdom of the late traditional ruler and his council in balancing modernity and tradition,” the statement said.

Oba Menu-Toyi I successfully managed multicultural interests while safeguarding cultural institutions for future generations.

Beyond his role on the throne, the President highlighted the monarch’s professional background, noting his service as a teacher and contributions to journalism at organisations including West African Pilot, Post Group of Newspapers, Daily Sketch, and New Nigeria.
