Taraba Deputy Governor impeachment process to begin over long absence

Taraba State Assembly may declare Deputy Governor Aminu Alkali incapacitated and begin impeachment over months-long absence, despite official denials

Taraba Deputy Governor impeachment proceedings may commence this week, following reports that the State House of Assembly is set to declare Alhaji Aminu Alkali incapacitated due to his prolonged absence from public duties.

Available information suggests that the process is expected to begin tomorrow.

Sources within the Assembly confirmed that Governor Agbu Kefas has already submitted a formal letter to the House, triggering the constitutional procedure for declaring the office of the Deputy Governor vacant.

The letter is expected to be read during plenary, setting the stage for an impeachment move and the nomination of a successor.

Alhaji Aminu Alkali has not been seen in public since November last year, prompting widespread speculation about his health and ability to continue in office.

His disappearance from public functions has generated concern and political tension in the state, with many citizens demanding transparency on the matter.

Investigations further reveal that the Deputy Speaker of the House, Alhaji Hamman-Adama Abdullahi, has been tipped as a likely replacement.

It is believed that senior lawmakers have already held private discussions with Governor Kefas to approve Abdullahi’s proposed nomination and to hasten the legislative process.

However, the Taraba State Government has moved quickly to dismiss the reports. Emmanuel Bello, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, urged the public to disregard what he described as “fake news”.

“No one nominated anyone to be Deputy Governor to Dr Agbu Kefas. Disregard any fake news,” Bello stated in a brief message to reporters.

Despite the denial, political watchers believe the momentum within the Assembly suggests that the Deputy Governor’s position is under serious threat.

If the House moves forward with the declaration of incapacity and proceeds with an impeachment vote, it would mark a significant shift in Taraba’s political landscape.
