Turaki made the remarks on Sunday, November 24, 2025, at a banquet and book presentation honouring former Minister of Information and Culture, Jerry Gana, in celebration of his 80th birthday.
Turaki, who was elected PDP Chairman at the party’s contested National Convention on 14–15 November 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State, said his administration would reform the party, restore internal democracy, and end impunity.
Responding to comments by former Governor of Niger State, Babangida Mu’azu, who lamented that Nigeria missed the opportunity to have Jerry Gana as President, Turaki said the PDP under his leadership would create conditions for credible leaders like Gana to contest elections.
“His Excellency, the Chief Servant said Nigeria has lost an opportunity of having a President Jerry Gana. And I want to respond by saying that the new PDP is going to make that possible,” Turaki said.
The Chairman added that the party would ensure the people decide freely who they want, with integrity, credibility, and a strong public record like that of Gana as the only requirements to reach the ballot paper.
Turaki also eulogised Gana as “a man of credibility” and “a politician’s politician,” highlighting his achievements across academics, public service, politics, family life, and private ventures, while maintaining an untarnished reputation.
“People who have spoken this night have spoken about the charismatic Prof Jerry Gana, a man of credibility, a man of integrity, a politician’s politician. An icon. An enigma. An institution. In spite of holding several public offices, he never soiled his name. People like Jerry Gana are only found in the PDP,” Turaki said.
