SMBLF Demands Southern Presidency in Bold 2027 Call

SMBLF urges southern presidency for 2027 elections, calling for zoning, electoral reform and stronger democratic balance in Nigeria

The Southern and Middle-Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has called on political actors and citizens to uphold Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system while insisting that the presidency should remain in the southern region after the 2027 general elections.

SMBLF push for Southern presidency in 2027 demand was made in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency meeting held in Abuja and signed by key regional leaders, including Oba Oladipo Olaitan of Afenifere, Dr Bitrus Pogu of the Middle Belt Forum, Senator John Azuta-Mbata of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, and Ambassador Godknows Igali of PANDEF.

The forum argued that zoning arrangements have become an established feature of Nigeria’s political culture since 1999 and should be respected to ensure national stability and balance.

According to the group, political parties are strongly advised to nominate and support presidential candidates from Southern Nigeria in the next election cycle.

SMBLF southern presidency 2027 demand also included a call for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain full independence in the conduct of elections and regulation of political parties.

The forum expressed concern over ongoing controversies surrounding sections of the Electoral Act, warning that unresolved issues could undermine electoral credibility and heighten political tension.

It further urged the National Assembly to review the relevant provisions and strengthen the legal framework guiding elections in Nigeria.

SMBLF also emphasised the need for judicial independence, stating that the courts must remain vigilant in interpreting the Constitution in the interest of peace, stability and democratic progress.

The group called on the Nigerian media to continue playing its watchdog role, describing the press as a vital pillar of democracy and accountability.

On security, SMBLF passed a vote of confidence in the Armed Forces and other security agencies but raised concerns over manpower shortages and operational challenges.

It also criticised what it described as preferential treatment of repentant terrorists, arguing that victims of violence remain displaced and neglected in camps without adequate support.

The forum further supported ongoing discussions on state and community policing, restructuring of the federation, and stronger economic reforms to address rising hardship across the country.
