Lawal Daura quits ADC, citing injustice and unstable leadership, and joins the APM ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections
Former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Musa Daura, has explained his decision to leave the African Democratic Congress, saying perceived injustice and unstable leadership within the party convinced him to quit several months ago.

Daura, a former Katsina State governorship aspirant, said on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, that his departure had nothing to do with failing to secure the ADC’s governorship ticket, as has been suggested in some quarters.
He said he had left the party months earlier but deliberately kept his next political move private while he assessed his options and sought to avoid making what he described as another political mistake.
The former security chief said his decision to enter politics was motivated by concerns about Nigeria’s security, leadership and economic challenges rather than a personal ambition to occupy public office.
“I joined politics not to achieve personal ambition, but because of my concern for the country and its people,” Daura said.
“I want to change people’s belief that lies, dishonesty and deception are part of politics,” he added.
Daura’s comments offer a glimpse into the political considerations behind his departure from the ADC at a time when the party is positioning itself as a major opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said internal disagreements and what he regarded as unfair treatment ultimately made it difficult for him to remain within the party.
Rather than retreat from politics, however, Daura has now moved to the Allied Peoples Movement, a party he described as having the potential to win elections and being relatively free from the internal crises that affected his experience in the ADC.
He urged Nigerians to consider supporting the APM ahead of the 2027 general elections, presenting the party as an alternative political platform through which he believes his commitment to national development can be pursued.
The move represents another political realignment ahead of the next general election, as politicians across Nigeria continue to reassess their affiliations and alliances.
Daura, however, did not disclose which political office he intends to contest under the APM.
He maintained that his involvement in politics should not be measured solely by whether he eventually secures an elective position.
For the former DSS director-general, the central issue remains his stated desire to contribute to improving the country.
His decision to remain politically active despite leaving the ADC suggests that his departure from the party was not a withdrawal from public life, but rather a search for a political platform he considers more consistent with his objectives.

As the 2027 election cycle gathers momentum, Daura’s move to the APM adds to the continuing realignment among politicians seeking platforms they believe can accommodate their ambitions and political convictions.
