Segun Sowunmi denies APC defection rumours with clarity

Segun Sowunmi APC Defection Rumour has been firmly quashed by the politician himself, following intense speculation over his recent visit to President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on Sunrise Daily aired on Channels Television, the former spokesman to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar insisted he remains a committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite his high-profile meeting with the president at his Lagos residence on June 8.

“If I wanted to decamp to the APC, I would have done that, but not at this time.

I’m still a member of the PDP,” said Sowunmi, a known PDP stalwart in Ogun State who once vied for the party’s governorship ticket.

The Segun Sowunmi APC Defection Rumour had gained momentum on social media after photos of his handshake with Tinubu circulated online.

Many viewed it as a symbolic gesture of political realignment.

But Sowunmi dismissed such assumptions as misplaced, citing a longstanding relationship with Tinubu dating back to 1994.

“I have one handshake, one visit to the president, whom I’ve known for decades, and you think I’m going to just leave my party? No, it doesn’t work that way,” he remarked.

Highlighting the importance of political maturity after nearly 27 years of Nigeria’s democracy, Sowunmi said, “At some point, we must stop the constant rivalry and start building consensus.”

He also shed light on the content of his discussion with the president, which reportedly included critical national issues such as insecurity in the North, the harsh effects of economic reforms, and the political turbulence in Rivers State.

Though Sowunmi had earlier hinted on Arise Television that leaving the PDP was a “strong possibility,” he appears to be walking back that stance, emphasising commitment to his long-standing political roots.
