SDP Voices Opposition to Tinubu’s Election Strategy

SDP comment on Tinubu 2027 election plan highlights party’s focus on unseating President Tinubu, not former President Jonathan, ahead of 2027 elections

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has issued a bold SDP Tinubu election plan statement, declaring that its primary political objective is to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections rather than focus on former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The party’s presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo, made the remarks on Wednesday, 20 May 2026, during an interview on Trust TV, where he addressed growing speculation about Jonathan’s possible return to active politics.

Adebayo stated that defeating Jonathan was not part of the party’s concern, stressing that the SDP’s main target is to unseat President Tinubu in the next election cycle.

He added that if Jonathan were to join the race, the SDP would welcome him as a seasoned political figure who could bring valuable experience and perspective to national debates.

According to him, the former president has likely gained international exposure and lessons since leaving office, which could shape his understanding of governance and democracy if he decides to contest again.

SDP candidate also referenced Jonathan’s past administration, saying the former president would have to address key issues such as insecurity and economic management if he returned to the political stage.
