Saraki Denies 2027 Presidency Run, Backs Southern Zoning

Saraki 2027 presidency run denied as former Senate President says South should complete its 8-year tenure and rules himself out of contest

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki on Thursday, March 27, 2026, ruled out any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, stating that it would be fair for the South to complete its eight-year tenure in power.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Saraki emphasised that his position aligns with the zoning principles within the Peoples Democratic Party, noting that the party had previously resolved to zone its presidential ticket to the South ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Saraki 2027 presidency run clarification comes amid ongoing political speculation about potential contenders.

Saraki explained that he had consistently supported the party’s decision on zoning and would abide by it.

He added that although the party had allowed open competition in the 2023 election cycle, its more recent discussions had shifted towards regional balance, with a consensus that the presidency should rotate to the South.

The former Kwara State governor stressed that his stance was rooted in fairness and party unity, rather than personal ambition.

He noted that adhering to zoning arrangements was essential to maintaining internal cohesion and ensuring equitable representation across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.
