Rivers Governorship 2027 Intensifies With Fubara, Rainbow Coalition

Rivers Governorship 2027: Fubara and Wike’s Rainbow Coalition heighten election stakes

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the All Progressives Congress, and Nyesom Wike’s Rainbow Coalition are driving a tense political contest ahead of the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.

The coalition, conceived by Wike, unites the state’s major parties under one umbrella, allowing smaller parties to align strategically while maintaining APC dominance.

The Rainbow Coalition has bolstered the People’s Democratic Party’s influence amid national party challenges, while almost all members of the State House of Assembly and 20 of 23 local government areas now fall under the APC.

Only Obio-Akpor, Port Harcourt City, and Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni remain under PDP control.

Governor Fubara is widely expected to pursue a second term, though a recent peace arrangement with Wike could affect his decision.

Political analysts suggest that Fubara retains the leverage to run under another platform if coalition dynamics prevent his APC candidacy.

Prominent aspirants include Tonye Cole, who may realign with the African Democratic Congress; Magnus Abe, whose ambition depends on Wike’s support; Dakuku Peterside, whose platform is still uncertain; and Boma Iyaye, a loyalist within Wike’s political family.

Other potential contenders from Wike’s coalition include Chief Felix Obuah, Ojukaye Flag Amachree, Kingsley Chinda, Dr Dax George-Kelly, and Senator Olaka Nwogu.

Analysts note that Wike’s endorsement is expected to be decisive, with aspirants lobbying vigorously for his backing.
