Rick Swart US Consul General assumes post in Lagos, pledges stronger ties between the United States and Nigeria across 17 states in southern Nigeria
Rick Swart US Consul General has assumed his new role as the United States’ top diplomat in Lagos. He will represent American interests across 17 states in southern Nigeria.

Swart arrived in Lagos on Wednesday and officially took over from JoEllen Gorg, who served in an interim capacity since November 2024.
His appointment was confirmed in a statement by the Public Diplomacy Section of the US Consulate General in Lagos.
“I am honoured to serve in Nigeria,” Swart said. “I look forward to meeting the people, exploring the culture, and working towards a safer, stronger partnership between our countries.”
He praised Gorg for her leadership and said her efforts have set a strong foundation for continued collaboration with the Nigerian people.
Swart is a seasoned diplomat with more than two decades of experience. He previously served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Chad and has held posts in Congo, Iraq, Geneva, London, Manila, and Dubai. He was also a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali.

Swart will work closely with Ambassador David Greene and the team at the US Embassy in Abuja to strengthen economic, cultural, and diplomatic relations.
