Reps Honour Late Gombe Lawmaker Bauchi Tongo, Suspend Sitting

Late Gombe Lawmaker Bauchi Tongo was honoured by Reps as the House suspended sitting to pay tribute following his death in Abuja

The House of Representatives on Tuesday suspended plenary in honour of late Gombe lawmaker Bauchi Tongo, who represented the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, following his death last month.

The House resumed from its end-of-legislative-year recess but held only a brief sitting before adjourning proceedings in line with the National Assembly’s tradition of paying tribute to deceased members.

The session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who led lawmakers in a moment of reflection for the late legislator before announcing the suspension of legislative activities.

Tongo, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), died on Friday, 12 June 2026, at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.

During the short plenary session, lawmakers offered prayers for the repose of his soul. Usman Kumo, a member representing Gombe State under the All Progressives Congress (APC), led Muslim prayers, while Cyril Hart of Rivers State led Christian prayers.

Announcing the adjournment, Kalu described the death of Tongo as a painful loss to the House and urged lawmakers to attend the next sitting scheduled in honour of their late colleague.

“Honourable members, we are adjourning today’s plenary in honour of our colleague, Hon Bauchi Tongo, who passed on a few weeks ago,” Kalu said.

“Even though we are not holding a plenary session today, members still need to come to honour one of our own because we don’t know when your turn will come. We pray that God will rest his soul,” he added.

Tongo’s death adds to recent losses recorded within Nigeria’s political class, with colleagues and constituents remembering him for his service as a representative of the people of Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency.
