Peter Obi Urged to Be Cautious of ADC Coalition Plans

Peter Obi ADC coalition caution—Prof. Adibe warns Obi to tread carefully as northern interests emerge in ADC ahead of 2027 presidential race

Peter Obi ADC coalition caution has been raised by Professor Jideofor Adibe, who warned that the 2027 presidential hopeful should be “extremely suspicious” of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) opposition alliance.

Speaking Tuesday on Channels TV’s The Morning Brief, Prof. Adibe said that with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar—a known presidential contender from northern Nigeria—still active within the ADC coalition, Obi and other southern aspirants like Rotimi Amaechi must remain vigilant.

“If I were Peter Obi, I would be extremely suspicious,” Adibe stated, noting that power dynamics in the coalition could undermine the ambitions of its southern members.

While both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have zoned their 2027 presidential tickets to the South, the ADC remains undecided.

Political analysts believe this gives room for northern politicians like Atiku to angle for the ticket—potentially at the expense of candidates like Obi.

Obi, who was Labour Party’s candidate in 2023 and a key member of the ADC-linked opposition coalition, is widely expected to contest again.

However, internal alignments and elite negotiations may place him in a vulnerable position.

Describing politics as a “chess game,” Adibe highlighted Obi’s reputation for strategic thinking.

“He doesn’t think on the surface. He likely has his own political war room calculating the next moves,” he said.

Still, he warned that power plays and shadow negotiations could become clearer in the coming months, particularly as more coalitions finalize their zoning arrangements and strategies.

The professor urged caution, saying Obi’s chances rest on not just popularity but political navigation within an increasingly competitive and fragmented opposition landscape.

“Like any chess game, it may work, or it may not. We just don’t know yet,” he concluded.
