Onanuga Accuses Peter Obi of Hypocrisy Over Panama Papers

Bayo Onanuga accuses Peter Obi of hypocrisy over comments on public funds, citing alleged offshore assets linked to the Panama Papers

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has accused former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi of hypocrisy over his comments on the management of public funds, citing allegations linked to the Panama Papers.

Onanuga made the remarks on Thursday, October 29, 2026, after Obi argued that Nigeria would be significantly wealthier if its leaders had kept public money in banks.

Obi had suggested that the country could have accumulated substantial wealth if public funds had been properly managed and preserved rather than lost through mismanagement.

Reacting to the statement, Onanuga questioned Obi’s record, alleging that the former Anambra governor had undeclared offshore assets and business interests, as reported in the Panama Papers leak.

In a post quoted by Daily Post, the presidential aide wrote: “Peter Obi likes to say things he doesn’t actually do. Remember the Panama Papers?”

He added that Obi had allegedly held undeclared offshore assets and business interests while serving as governor of Anambra State.

Onanuga also mocked Obi by referring to him as “Saint Peter”, accusing him of misleading his supporters with his public statements.

The Panama Papers, a major international investigation published in 2016, exposed offshore financial arrangements involving politicians, businesspeople and other prominent individuals around the world.

However, the existence of an offshore company or account does not, by itself, establish that a person committed a crime.

The exchange adds to the political disagreements between Tinubu’s camp and Obi, who remains a prominent opposition figure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Onanuga’s comments centre on whether Obi’s remarks about the management of public funds are consistent with the allegations he raised about the former governor’s financial interests.

The claims remain attributable to the presidential aide, and the report provided does not include a response from Obi to the latest accusation.
