Obi pledges tough action against criminality in presidential ambition

Peter Obi fuel subsidy criminality warning as NDC presidential hopeful vows to tackle corruption and inefficiency if elected Nigeria president in 2027

Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential hopeful Peter Obi has declared that he would not tolerate any form of criminality if elected President in the 2027 general election, describing fuel subsidy practices as what he termed “organised crime” against the country.

Obi raises alarm over alleged fuel subsidy criminality was issued during an appearance on Trust TV, where the former presidential candidate outlined his position on governance and economic accountability.

Obi argued that Nigeria’s fuel consumption patterns were inconsistent with empirical data, comparing the country with Pakistan, which he noted has a similar geographical size but reportedly consumes significantly less fuel.

He suggested that the disparity raised questions about inefficiencies within Nigeria’s fuel distribution and subsidy system, which he insists must be urgently addressed.

The presidential hopeful reiterated his commitment to ending corruption in all forms, stressing that his administration would not accommodate practices he considers economically harmful or unsustainable.

Fuel subsidy has remained a contentious issue in Nigeria, with Obi and other major candidates during the 2023 elections previously supporting its removal as part of broader economic reforms.

President Bola Tinubu eventually announced the removal of fuel subsidy during his inauguration at Eagles Square, Abuja, marking a significant policy shift in the country’s economic direction.
