Speaking in Benin on Friday, the governor tied Obi’s July 7 appearance at St Philomena Hospital School of Nursing Sciences to a sudden rise in violence.
Obi had visited the institution to donate ₦15 million.
“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed.
For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance,” Okpebholo stated.
The governor made the comments during an event to welcome federal lawmaker Marcus Onobun into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Onobun, representing Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben Federal Constituency, had just defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Okpebholo praised Onobun’s move, describing it as the final blow to the PDP in Edo.
“Last week, we finally buried the PDP in Edo State. I saw someone crying at Ring Road, talking about having 65 per cent. That is what we call social media winning,” he said.

The governor also declared that Edo voters would back President Bola Tinubu in 2027, promising a turnout of 2.5 million votes.
