Reacting to those who described his followers as “street urchins” and “low-class Nigerians”, the former Labour Party presidential candidate said such language reflects a dangerous elitism and a growing lack of respect for ordinary citizens.

Obi, who shared his statement on (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, condemned the trend of looking down on struggling Nigerians, especially in a country grappling with deep economic hardship.

“No Nigerian is of no value. No Nigerian is a street urchin,” Obi declared.

The 64-year-old businessman and former Anambra State governor insisted his political journey has always been about empowering the marginalised, not pandering to the elite.

“My involvement in politics has never been about associating with the so-called high and mighty, but about standing with the ordinary Nigerians whose voices have been silenced,” he said.

Highlighting his policy focus, Obi emphasised that true leadership must deliver on education, healthcare, and poverty reduction.

According to him, leadership built on compassion is what Nigeria desperately needs—not one based on status or mockery.

Obi concluded by urging leaders and citizens alike to respect every Nigerian, regardless of background or status.

“True leadership is not about mocking the weak; it is about lifting them up.”
