PDP caretaker committees take charge in two key states

PDP caretaker committees appointed in Cross River and Akwa Ibom as party restructures ahead of congresses following state executive tenure expiries

PDP caretaker committees have been officially appointed to oversee the affairs of the Cross River and Akwa Ibom State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party, following the expiration of the existing state executive tenures.

The National Working Committee (NWC) made the announcement on Tuesday via a statement from the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, citing the party’s constitutional provisions as amended in 2017.

In Cross River, confusion had mounted last week over whether the scheduled state congress would proceed after conflicting messages from party officials.

While acting National Chairman Umar Damagum informed INEC that the congress had been postponed, National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu insisted it would go ahead.

Despite some mobilisation in Calabar, Ologunagba later confirmed that no valid congress took place.

The NWC has now approved a Caretaker Committee led by Bassey Eko Ewa as Chairman and Bassey Joseph as Acting Secretary to manage party affairs in Cross River from 1 October 2025 for a maximum of three months or until a new executive is elected.

Other committee members include Joe Ekpe Edet, Udie Mike, Lynne Bassey, Etim Okon, and Victor Erig Takon among others. The party urged unity among all stakeholders in the state.

In a parallel move, the NWC also dissolved the Akwa Ibom State Executive Committee and installed a new caretaker team effective 30 September 2025.

Igwat Umoren will chair the Akwa Ibom committee, with Harrison Ekpo as Deputy Chairman and Borono Bassey as Secretary.

The committee includes representatives from all party wings, such as Mary Silvia Abara as Woman Leader and Barr. Ewa Okpo as Publicity Secretary.

According to Ologunagba, the party is committed to maintaining organisational order and preparing its state chapters for new leadership.

“The NWC calls on all leaders, critical stakeholders and teeming members of our Party to remain united and continue to work together for the progress of the party,” he said in both announcements.

The PDP’s decision to appoint caretaker committees comes amid internal restructuring efforts as the party seeks to strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of future elections and stabilise operations in politically significant states.
