PDP 2027 presidential ticket draws fresh contenders

PDP 2027 presidential ticket sees quiet interest from new aspirants, as party signals broader consultations beyond Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde

PDP 2027 presidential ticket is quietly drawing interest from a wider pool of aspirants than the high-profile names currently dominating the public space, according to the party’s leadership.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disclosed that extensive negotiations and consultations are already underway to select a unifying candidate capable of challenging the ruling party in the upcoming general elections.

In a press briefing held in Abuja on Sunday, the PDP’s Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, explained that although figures such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde are widely discussed in the media, they represent only part of the unfolding picture.

“Those names you mentioned remain speculative at this stage,” Osuoha stated.

“What is important now in the PDP are negotiations and discussions.

The party is engaging in deep consultations to identify the most credible candidate who can unify the country and command nationwide support.”

He emphasised that several politicians across the southern region are discreetly engaging stakeholders in private talks.

These aspirants, though yet to publicly declare their ambitions, are steadily positioning themselves for a formal entrance into the race.

Despite the building anticipation, Osuoha clarified that the party’s immediate focus is its upcoming national convention, during which new national officers will be elected to lead the party into the next electoral cycle.

“It is after the convention that the party will formally narrow the field to those who want to contest,” he said.

“The PDP is determined to conduct a free, fair, and transparent primary election.

We want to show Nigerians that when we talk about democracy, we practise it.”

His comments align with recent remarks by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, who acknowledged the prominence of Jonathan, Obi, and Makinde but noted that other credible southern contenders were also in discussion.

With less than two years to go until party primaries, the PDP is being urged by analysts to prioritise a candidate who can bridge internal divisions and present a credible alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Insiders suggest the party is weighing factors such as regional balance, electability, and cross-party appeal in its internal assessments.

The PDP’s zoning arrangement for the presidency to the South further frames the emerging field of candidates.

Although still early days, Osuoha’s remarks provide the clearest signal yet that the race for the PDP 2027 presidential ticket is open—and heating up behind the scenes.
