Olawepo-Hashim Makinde PDP unity talks highlight push for cohesion as party battles internal crisis ahead of elections

A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has intensified consultations within the party following a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde.

The high-level engagement, held in Abuja, focused on strengthening internal cohesion and addressing strategic concerns affecting the party’s future, according to a statement from Olawepo-Hashim’s media office.

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim described the meeting as productive and forward-looking, stressing that it went beyond routine consultations to tackle deeper issues within the party.

“The engagement underscored the need for internal cohesion among key blocs, clear leadership direction, and consolidation of influence across regions,” the statement read.

He commended Seyi Makinde for his commitment to democratic values and his role in sustaining the party’s ideals.

“Governor Makinde has shown consistency in defending the ideals of the party and strengthening democratic institutions,” he said.

The aspirant emphasised that unity remains critical to the party’s ability to provide credible opposition and national leadership.

“At a time when Nigeria requires stability, inclusiveness, and institutional strength, party unity cannot be compromised,” he added.

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim expressed optimism that sustained engagement would help resolve internal disputes and rebuild trust among members.

The Peoples Democratic Party has been grappling with a protracted crisis since its November 2025 elective National Convention in Ibadan, which produced a new National Working Committee but also triggered divisions.

The situation worsened following leadership disputes, the exit of a former national chairman, and the emergence of parallel claims within the party structure.

Tensions escalated further after a Court of Appeal ruling nullified the convention, deepening uncertainty and prompting reconciliation efforts led by the party’s Board of Trustees.
