In a statement issued on Tuesday to mark the 2026 International Nurses Day, Soludo praised nurses for their resilience and commitment to saving lives, noting that their contributions remain central to the effectiveness of the healthcare system.
International Nurses Day is celebrated globally on May 12 each year to recognise the essential role of nurses in healthcare systems and to highlight the need for continued investment in the profession.
This year’s theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future – Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” underscores the importance of strengthening the nursing workforce worldwide.
Soludo, who founded the non-governmental organisation Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, said nurses represent the often unseen backbone of medical care delivery.
“Today, we celebrate the unsung heroes whose compassion and dignity speak louder than words — our nurses,” she said.
She added that behind every recovering patient is a nurse who demonstrates patience, courage and emotional strength during critical moments of care.
“Behind every recovering patient is a dedicated nurse who stayed awake through the night, offered reassurance in moments of fear and anxiety, and gave care with patience, strength, and love,” she stated.
Soludo emphasised that nursing goes beyond medical treatment, stressing that nurses also provide emotional support that strengthens patients and communities.
“Their service goes beyond medicine; they bring hope, comfort, and humanity to healthcare and our society,” she said.
She further commended nurses in Anambra State and across Nigeria, urging them to remain committed to excellence in service delivery despite challenges in the health sector.
“Your commitment continues to save lives, strengthen families, and uphold the dignity of our communities every single day,” she added.
Soludo concluded by expressing gratitude to nurses for their sacrifices, describing their profession as one that makes society healthier, safer and more humane.
