NNPP tells INEC to tackle Nigeria’s voter trust crisis, arguing public confidence matters more than internal party disputes
New Nigeria People’s Party National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to prioritise restoring public confidence in Nigeria’s elections over internal party disputes.

Johnson acknowledged that leadership crises and litigations within parties create administrative burdens for INEC but insisted the larger issue is voter trust.
“It is, in a sense, understandable that INEC complains about the disturbances caused by internal party disputes,” he said. “Because the Commission is often joined as a necessary party in these suits, it inevitably drains their time and resources.”
He added: “The greatest cause of voter apathy in Nigeria is not internal party friction; it is the widespread perception that INEC is complicit in subverting the will of the people. Until INEC demonstrates absolute transparency and proves it is an unbiased arbiter, no amount of internal party stability will bring Nigerians back to the polling units.”
The call comes after INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan SAN, expressed concern over infighting and litigations within political parties.
He announced that the 2026 guidelines will enforce stricter standards on membership documentation, financial transparency, and inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities during party primaries.

Johnson emphasised that while political parties should strengthen internal democracy, the commission must lead reforms that restore the integrity and credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
